Free events to support businesses in Belfast this summer

Belfast City Council is giving local businesses and entrepreneurs the chance to hone their skills this summer with a series of free events and workshops. guidance in online marketing, merchandising, business planning and more.

On Thursday, June 8 (9:30am – 12:00pm) there will be an introduction to paid online advertising and how to get started advertising your business on Google, Facebook, and Instagram.

Participants can sign up to get free help selecting the right platform for your target audience and setting and managing online advertising budgets. Next up is Elevate U, a free half-day workshop on Monday, June 12 (9:45am – 12:45pm) for those who have recently started or are thinking about starting their own hair or beauty business.

Led by professional makeup artist and owner of the beauty brand Grainne McCoy, it will feature insights and discussions from industry experts on how to set your cosmetics business apart from the crowd.

Grainne will highlight her own journey, including her time on the hit BBC series The Apprentice, and be joined by a panel of business owners to talk about navigating the highs and lows of being self-employed in a growing industry.

“The beauty industry is a thriving industry right now and if I can inspire one person to change their mindset from thinking ‘that’s not something I can do’ and get them to ‘go for it’ then my job is done ,” Grain explained.

“Elevate U is a really great opportunity for anyone interested in, or in the early stages of considering going into the industry for themselves – there’s plenty of help out there and you never know what’s going to happen with events like this can mean to you.”

Other speakers include James Conway, award-winning tattoo artist and owner of Skull & Bones Tattoo Society and hairdresser Joyce Wells, owner of Joyce Wells Hair & Beauty, specializing in hair restoration treatments.

Then, on Tuesday, June 13 (9:30 AM – 12:00 PM), new and existing retailers can pick up tips and tricks to impress their customers with strong visual merchandising.

The session, at 2 Royal Avenue, includes advice on optimizing your brand across both physical and online stores, as well as the chance to get your hands on and curate your own visually impressive display.

Finally, on Thursday 15 June (09:30-12:00), companies, social enterprises and cooperatives will be invited online to gain insight into how to turn your business strategy into practical action.

Industry experts will look at different business models and provide step-by-step advice on how to build a strategy that includes everything from budget and resources to marketing and cash flow.
