SDLP Foyle MLA Sinead McLaughlin
SDLP Foyle MLA Sinéad McLaughlin has called for a redoubled effort to advocate for the creation of an investment zone in the Northwest, adding that the lack of decentralization will frustrate efforts to introduce this measure for jobs and growth in the city.
It follows correspondence from UK Minister for Leveling Up Dehenna Davison outlining the rationale for such zones and reiterating that any investment zone in Northern Ireland is subject to the return of a devolved administration.
Foyle’s MLA said: “When the UK government confirmed there would be at least one investment zone in Northern Ireland, it was crystal clear to the people here that Derry, as the capital of the North West region, was at the top of the list as such zone must be designated.
“It is critical that we take conscious measures like this to address the urgent need for jobs and investment in our city.
“Furthermore, we are well positioned in the sectors that the government has identified as priority areas, such as life sciences, and I believe political representatives need to be proactive in defending Derry to attract this kind of investment.
“Unfortunately, we know that the lack of an executive and assembly here will mean that no investment zone will be established until the ongoing boycott ends and the government is back to work here.
“This is just another example of why we need to get back to work in Stormont, address the issues people face on a daily basis and work to reverse this region’s decades of economic neglect.
“We will make a strong case for the UK Government on this move, outlining the strengths of our region and articulating the value of this move for our particular context.
“I look forward to continuing to work with relevant ministers on this issue.”
