York’s Medieval Hospice hosted Google’s Digital Garage on Thursday, May 18, where more than 75 local businesses gathered for a day of digital skills training.
At Thursday’s event, Google’s expert trainers guided companies through a series of innovative ways to attract new customers and take their brand to new heights. Participants learned how to harness the power of video marketing, write engaging social media stories, and use Google Analytics technology to measure online engagement.
The event marked the end of a series of four free digital training events – three online and one in-person – organized this spring by York City Council, in partnership with Google UK. More events are already planned for fall 2023.
The Google Digital Garage is one of Google’s leading investment programs in the UK, helping businesses and individuals learn digital skills for free through a series of courses and one-to-one sessions.
Google mentors and Business Growth Managers from the City of York Council were on hand throughout the day to provide businesses with personalized support and advice.
Between the sessions, the attendees networked over lunch while enjoying a drink in the fourteenth-century Hospitium and the surrounding Museum Gardens.
The support offered by this event program does not stop at the sessions themselves; companies that attended one of the four training sessions were also able to sign up for free one-on-one support from Google.

This event is part of the City of York Council’s business support offer, after the council received £130,000 for 2022/23 from the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. This is one of many initiatives using the funding to help businesses thrive in the city.
Neil Ferris, Corporate Director of Place at the City of York Council, said:
The events we partnered with Google this spring have enabled over 400 businesses in York to build their brand online and grow their business.
“Given the success of our recent training events, we look forward to continuing our partnership with Google and hosting more events later this year.”
Debbie Weinstein, Managing Director of Google UK & Ireland, said:
Digital technologies are truly transformative and can help businesses and individuals across the UK increase revenue, increase productivity and unlock their full potential.
“As a former business owner, I understand how difficult it is to know where to go for advice, which is why we provide hands-on support as part of our nationwide digital skills drive to help more people with invaluable skills that help create jobs and economic opportunities to create.”
