Smart Glass Research: The market for smart dimmable car awnings is valued at 127 million RMB in 2022 has a promising future.

Smart dimming glass is a new type of special optoelectronic glass formed by joining a liquid crystal film in the middle of two layers of glass and bonding them under high temperature and high pressure.

By implementation mode, it falls into electrically controlled, temperature controlled, optically controlled and pressure controlled types.

In the automotive field, there are four major types of dimming glass: polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC), suspended particle devices (SPD), electrochromic (EC), and dye liquid crystal (Dye LC). Whereby PDLC, SPD and Dye LC have physical dimming and EC chemical dimming.

PDLC appeared first. As the most mature and low-cost technology, the majority of China’s dimming glass manufacturers use the solution;

SPD is mainly used in high-end models such as Mercedes S/SL and yachts due to its high power consumption and cost;

Dye LC spends a relatively short time dimming using dichroic dye molecules;

EC is characterized by little haze, low energy consumption, good thermal insulation effect, continuous dimming, relatively long dimming time (average 2 min) and average costs.

Nowadays panoramic awnings often use smart dimming glass, which not only gives a deeper spatial impression, but also automatically reduces the transmittance of ultraviolet and infrared rays in the blazing sun to lower the temperature inside. According to the publisher’s data, 1,636,900 units of new passenger cars have arrived China were installed in 2022 with panoramic awnings, of which 0.5% smart dimmable awnings. It is expected that panoramic awnings will be installed in 3,684,100 new passenger cars by 2025, of which 6.1% will be smart dimmable awnings.

In this report, the panoramic awning refers to: non-opening large sunroof without segment structure; the dimming awning means: turn on the smart dimming control function based on panoramic awning.

In the future, smart dimming glass can be applied to side windows and windscreen, among other things. For example, the side windows can display advertisements (displayed when the vehicle is stationary and become transparent when the vehicle is started and turned on), and provide graffiti function in the back seat for children, human-computer interaction, entertainment and other possibilities; the windshield features AR HUD for anti-glare: in conjunction with the front view camera, recognizes the high beam of the oncoming vehicle and automatically adjusts the transmission of the windshield to eliminate glare and ensure safe driving.

At CES 2023, the BMW iVISION Dee Concept car featuring Gauzy’s PDLC and SPD smart glass technologies was on display. The windshield allows the HUD to provide wide viewing angles for a virtual view for all passengers; the side windows support dynamic privacy, shade and mood management.

The segmented SPD-LCG smart glass windshield for BMW iVISION Dee enables the HUD to provide wide viewing angles for a virtual image.

The chain of the smart dimming glass industry shows that the upstream is mainly engaged in the production of relevant dimming materials, films, glass substrates and PVBs; the midstream is responsible for the integration of dimming glass applied to OEM markets and aftermarkets. The upstream and midstream manufacturers first started using patents. Among the global top 1,000 companies by patent application, the top five companies are BOE, Nito DenkoRicoh, Sony and Fuyao, most of which patents of BOE and Fuyao have been filed in 2019-2022.

For example indoors May 2019 BOE filed the CN 210514886 U Dimming Glass patent, a patent for display window technology in which the dimming glass layer is set up with a basic dimming structure and a functional dimming structure: the former is used to adjust the transmittance of light shining on it, and the latter is used to reflect the light of a specific waveband shining on it.

In terms of smart dimmable glass supply, the main suppliers are Fuyao, AGC, NSG, Gauzy, Saint-Gobain, Ambilight and Research Frontiers. Among them, Fuyao remains absolutely dominant, thanks to its stable supply relationships in the automotive glass market, as well as factors such as dimming glass technology R&D, cost consideration and user experience.

In the OEM market, installed models include Toyota Venza, BYD Seal, Neta S, Lotus Eletre, NIO EC7, Porsche Taycan, Lexus RZ, and Cadillac CELESTIQ (not mass-produced). Among them, the Porsche Taycan’s blackout glass surface is split into nine individually controllable areas and offers five blackout effects: transparent, frosted, translucent, vibrant and user-defined. As consumers demand more beautiful, comfortable and intelligent vehicles in the future, smart dimming glass will usher in a boom in other areas in addition to the panoramic awning.
